AHS Fiftieth Reunion - Festival of the Forks
On Saturday morning, we all met in front of Washington Gardner High School and climbed into the waiting yellow school bus for our 15 minutes of "fame" - the first time ever that a class reunion has joined the Festival of the Forks parade. The bus was followed by the Albion High Marching Band, marching smartly and playing all the old familiar "fight songs" and more. Armed with cameras, we took pictures out the bus window and of each other. A cheer went up when someone spotted Coach Jerry Sacharski in the crowd at the corner of Michigan and Superior. Later, after the parade, Coach Sacharski held court in front of the Bohem Theater. Though in his nineties, he still remembered each football player he'd coached and Latin student he'd taught over 50 years ago. AND something specific about each of them - a great pass, a touchdown celebration - he's an inspiration to all!
The weather couldn't have been more perfect! Downtown, the street was lined on both sides with booths selling handmade crafts, art, and other goodies. Kids could get their faces painted, and budding artists could try their hand at sidewalk chalk painting with renowned chalk artist Lee Jones in front of the bank. The library hosted an art exhibit of local artists. It seemed every person in Albion and from miles around was enjoying the fun.
Albion has a great new, beautiful and challenging disc golf course in Rieger Park and anyone could try his hand at sidestepping the many water and vegetation hazards. Laura The Elephant obligingly gave rides to delighted kids and grownups in her paddock in the park. Across the street, appetites were satisfied from one of the many food booths at Stoffer Plaza.
